Want to enhance your action cam videos? Create professional overlays from your GPS tracks.

First, you need a video and a GPS track as a .gpx file. If you recorded the track with a GPS device (e.g., Garmin), you can download it from the device itself or from the provider's cloud. If you use a GoPro with integrated GPS, you can extract the track using tools like Telemetry Lite. Using a GPS device? Then it's useful to film the GPS time at the beginning of the recording. This will make it much easier for you to synchronize the video and overlay later.
Open the app and select the .gpx file. After adjusting the display settings, click on "Generate Overlay". Depending on the length of the track and your hardware, generation can take a few minutes. At the end, you can download the overlay as a .zip file. Want your overlay to consist of multiple elements? Simply generate multiple overlays. You can later combine them as you like in your video editing software.
Extract the downloaded .zip file into its own folder in your project directory. In this folder, you'll find a series of .png files. You can now import these into your video editing software as a clip. The frame rate of the overlay is 10 fps. Finally, you need to synchronize the overlay clip with the video. A timestamp is displayed in the overlay. Match this with the filmed GPS time. Once this is done, crop away the timestamp from the overlay.
The app runs entirely in your browser and processes data only there. Nothing is transmitted to the server.
Registration is also not required.
Easy Overlay is a so-called PWA (Progressive Web App). This means it can be installed like a normal application.
This way, you always have the app available, even when you don't have internet access.
Easy Overlay is free and will always remain free.
The source code is freely available and can be viewed on GitLab. This allows the app to be self-hosted and customized if needed.
